The Importance of Patch Testing: Best Practices for Brow Professionals

Patch testing is an important step in keeping your clients safe and your services professional. While allergic reactions to brow products are rare, they can happen. As a pro, it’s your responsibility to minimise the risk. A quick and simple patch test can save your client from discomfort and ensure a smooth experience for everyone.

Why Patch Testing Matters

Even if a client has had brow treatments before, things can change. Skin sensitivities develop, formulas evolve, and new ingredients can trigger unexpected reactions. That’s why a patch test is a non-negotiable part of responsible brow artistry.

Here’s why it’s important:

  • Prevents Reactions: Identifies sensitivities before full application.

  • Builds Trust: Shows your clients you prioritise their safety.

  • Protects Your Business: Helps avoid liability issues if a reaction does occur.

When to Patch Test

Patch tests should be conducted at least 48 hours before a client’s appointment to allow time for potential reactions to develop.

Always patch test if a client:

  • Is new to your salon and hasn’t used your specific brand of products.

  • Has never had a brow tint, lightening, or lamination service before.

  • Has changed medications, as this can affect skin sensitivity.

  • Has recently had cosmetic treatments such as peels, micro needling, or laser treatments.

  • Has a history of allergies, sensitive skin, or previous product reactions.

Re-Patch Testing for Returning Clients

  • If a client hasn’t had a treatment in 6 months or more, it’s recommended to patch test again.

  • If you switch to a new formula or brand, always re-test—even if the client has had similar treatments before.

How to Conduct a Patch Test

A patch test is quick and simple but must be done correctly for accurate results.

  1. Cleanse the Skin – Wipe a small area behind the ear or on the inner elbow with a gentle cleanser. We recommend our First Base Ceramide Foaming Cleanser for a thorough yet skin-soothing prep.

  1. Apply a Small Amount – Use the exact product you’ll be using in their treatment.

  1. Let It Dry – Instruct the client to leave it on and avoid washing or touching the area.

  1. Monitor for 24–48 Hours – Any redness, itching, swelling, or irritation means the product isn’t suitable.

If any reaction occurs, do not proceed with the treatment. Instead, offer an alternative or refer the client to a dermatologist for further advice.

Supporting Healthy Brows Post-Treatment

If your client has sensitivities but still wants to enhance their brows, recommending gentle aftercare is key. Hydrating and nourishing products like Brow Code's Brow Gold Nourishing Growth Oil can help strengthen the brows while avoiding irritation.

Communicating with Clients

Some clients may see patch testing as unnecessary or inconvenient. Here’s how to explain why it’s important:

  • “A patch test makes sure you won’t have an unexpected reaction to the product. Your safety is always our priority.”

  • “Even if you’ve had this treatment before, formulas differ between brands, so we always test first.”

  • “It’s a quick step that saves you from irritation or discomfort later, it’s worth it!”

  • “Our professional products are formulated with gentle, high-quality ingredients, but skin can change over time. A patch test ensures you won’t have an unexpected reaction.”

Positioning patch testing as part of your standard professional service builds trust and reassures clients that their safety comes first.

The Brow Code Ethos: Professional-Grade Formulations

At Brow Code Professional, we’re committed to creating high-performance, salon-grade products that deliver incredible results while maintaining the highest standards in safety and quality.

Many of our formulations are thoughtfully developed with gentle, conditioning ingredients to support healthier brows with every treatment.

While some of our products are free from common allergens like ammonia and PPD, this may not apply to all formulas, so it’s essential to review ingredient lists carefully before use

Every skin type is different, and even the cleanest formulations can trigger a reaction.

That’s why the most professional approach is always a cautious one: patch test every time, educate your clients, and treat with confidence.
